Gareth Williams

Gareth joined EDC in 2003 as senior geotechnical engineer with responsibility for meeting clients for both geotechnical and geo-environmental investigations including sampling, control of field staff, design of fieldwork, slope stability analyses, effluent (domestic wastewater) on-site disposal design, plus factual and interpretive reporting including foundation and retaining wall design recommendations. Gareth has specialist skills in interpreting the results of contaminated land investigations. He also acts as an expert witness at Council and geo-environmental issues. Gareth was also part of the team that went to Christchurch in 2010 following the September 2010 earthquake to help with the recovery. He has been involved in many projects since that time in Canterbury and across the South Island.
In late 2018, Gareth moved to the Bay of Plenty to help develop EDC’s growing office in Whakatane.
Before joining EDC, Gareth worked extensively on the geotechnical aspects of residential, commercial and industrial development projects from Northland to Wellington. He has been involved in geotechnical and contaminated land investigations on a vast range of development projects in the United Kingdom, Russia and Singapore. His environmental investigations included testing for explosives, hydrocarbons and heavy metals for a variety of end uses from residential to commercial.
Away from the office, Gareth and his wife run a small farm with cattle, horses, chickens, goats and a pet sheep. He has two children.

Sam Polson

After a period working in Wellington and Singapore, Sam spent five years in the Middle East working on a range of high-profile projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. However Sam realised that he missed the green grass of home and the projects that New Zealand offers, so at the end of 2011 Sam returned to his old University town to assist with the rebuild. His areas of expertise are the design of concrete and steel commercial buildings, residential design, seismic strengthening and acting as an expert witness. Sam is an advocate for strengthening and upgrading of existing buildings. He believes in collaboration with building owners and stakeholders to develop solutions that are cost effective, easy to build and meet the project brief.

Giles Learman

Giles joined EDC in March 2012 and was previously a Director in a UK based multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, with responsibility for geotechnical and contaminated land engineering, along with company health and safety. Now in the much drier climate of Canterbury Giles enjoys leading and developing the geotechnical team in Christchurch whilst also helping build upon EDC’s environmental capabilities. Giles is skilled in; foundation assessment, design and interpretation of geotechnical and contaminated land investigations, slope stability analysis, retaining wall design, project management, cost benefit analysis and negotiation with regulators

Ian Hendy

Ian joined EDC in 1995, bringing broad experience in geotechnical and civil fields to the company. He has developed considerable expertise in all aspects of land development including bulk earthworks, retaining structures, slope stability assessments, building foundations, environmental controls, roads, stormwater, wastewater and water supply infrastructure.
He is highly experienced in providing detailed investigation, design and reporting services on land development projects from the initial concept, right through to construction supervision and the certification stage. Ian has a particular specialisation in design and computer modelling for stormwater- related projects, including flood plain assessments, stream-works, and the design of ponds and reticulation to the required technical and environmental standards, often working for local councils. He also acts at hearings as an expert witness.
When he has the time, Ian has the perfect escape from work – he heads to the skies as a part time glider pilot.

Graeme joined EDC in 2019 as the Structural Team Leader – BoP, and Structural Technical Advisor. Graeme previously worked for BRANZ as the Principal Structural Engineer over a period of 23 years, undertaking research and deriving solutions for structural engineering problems in NZ’s commercial sector, particularly in the area’s of light timber framing and non-structural components. He enjoys putting the wealth of knowledge gained in that role into practice as a consulting engineer with EDC.
Graeme was a member of the MBIE Engineering Advisory Group immediately following the Canterbury earthquakes, taking a lead role in the development of the MBIE Guidelines for repairing and rebuilding houses affected by the Canterbury earthquakes.
Graeme has previously enjoyed participating in the management of the Structural Engineering Society (Sesoc) and the NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE), having served as President of the NZSEE from 2008 to 2010. He has also served on a number of Standards NZ, joint AS/NZS and international standards committees.

Stanley Chung

Stanley joined the EDC team in 2021 as the Structural Team Leader for Auckland. After graduation he joined WSP and progressed to a Principal Structural Engineer over a period of 11 years. While being based in Wellington the projects he worked on were spread around the country and included a stint completing post-earthquake inspections following the events in Christchurch. His project experience varies in size and complexity, including working with government departments.
Stanley is a well-respected engineer who has presented at several conferences and has written papers to highlight projects and industry trends. He has a strong preference for timber design (where possible), however understands design using steel and concrete, so is able to provide appropriate solutions to all problems. He is also familiar with the assessment and strengthening of existing buildings. Stanley believes in a strong collaborative design process with other consultants to all ensure that the solutions meet the project brief.
Stanley is an active person outside of work and still plays rugby and AFL (among other sports). However, he suspects that his playing days may be coming to an end as he has started to pick up more sedate past times including board games and walks with the dog. Oh, he is also impartial to a good winery!

Matt is a Christchurch local who has honed his skills as a structural engineer since graduating from the University of Canterbury in 2015. He has extensive experience in residential design where he applies practical solutions to ensure a buildable and cost effective solution. Matt has widespread experience on the assessment and repair of earthquake damaged properties following the Canterbury Earthquakes. He also has experience in a range of commercial projects, including detailed seismic assessments and the design of new commercial retail buildings. He prides himself on working with contractors and clients to provide real world solutions.

Delane originally joined EDC in early 2012, and has played a key role in the Christchurch office as a Geotechnical/Geoenvironmental Engineer. He has advanced his geotechnical assessment knowledge and is skilled in cost identifying effective foundation and ground treatment options for a range of development scenarios. He has experience with geotechnical issues across the country, having worked on a number of Importance Level 4 structures in remote areas of New Zealand. He is also well versed in the preparation of Preliminary Site Investigation Reports (PSI’s) and Detailed Site Investigation Reports (SIR’s), in accordance with the NES requirements, for potentially contaminated sites, and validation of remedial works.

Elizabeth joined EDC in late 2023 as the team lead for the Bay of Plenty geotechnical team. Originally from the US with a background in environmental remediation and dam construction, she moved to Christchurch in 2011 to help with rebuild efforts related to the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence. She has spent most of the past decade working primarily within the Christchurch region in foundation design and forensic geotechnical engineering on a wide range of projects, from small-scale residential elements to large subdivisions and Importance Level 4 structures, as well as works through the Ministry of Education.
Part of New Zealand’s Rapid Post Disaster Building Assessment team, Elizabeth can be called upon as a technical specialist to review land instabilities on commercial, industrial and residential buildings following natural disasters across the country.

Tania Morgun

Tania joined the EDC team in 2024 as the Fire Team Leader. She is a Chartered Fire Engineer with substantial experience and reputation as an expert the field. Tania holds a Master’s degree in Fire Engineering from the University of Canterbury and has 30 years of experience as a consulting engineer. Tania is practice area assessor in Fire for EngNZ.
Tania commenced her engineering career in Ukraine after graduation from the Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, BE in the field of Building Services. In 1995 Tania emigrated to NZ, and since then, she has been accumulating a portfolio of expertise in design and review of prescriptive and performance-based design on large commercial, industrial, and residential projects.
A part of the strong technical background, Tania has practical regulatory experience working on amendments of the Building Act, Building Code, Standards, and compliance documents. For 4 years she was a Senior Fire Engineer with MBIE. As a Technical Building Advisor at Auckland Council she reviewed building consent applications on compliance with the code, and provided fire engineering advise to consultants.
Tania is driven by the challenge of solving problems. She believes that creative collaboration leads to the best solutions. Tania understands that fire engineering impacts all building design disciplines, including architecture, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering. By engaging with the experts across these disciplines and applying first principles, she is able to offer solid value engineering to the clients.
Tania is an active tennis player, but when she is not on a court, she enjoys watching Netflix with a glass of vino.

Jordan Bliss

Jordan has been with EDC since 2014, starting as an intern while studying, then becoming full-time in 2016.
As a Structural Engineer and Fire Designer, Jordan has worked across a large range of projects in the residential and commercial sectors, including design of new residential houses and apartment buildings, alterations and recladding of existing buildings, seismic assessments, and construction monitoring. He particularly enjoys projects where he can provide both structural and fire services, to ensure the designs for each discipline complement one another.
As Fire Design Technical Lead, Jordan understands how small details have the potential to derail a building design, and works with the fire team to offer a detail-oriented service with early engagement to avoid belated budget implications and structural design changes. His understanding of Passive Fire Protection, construction details and Consent processes helps avoid common pitfalls.
Jordan is a keen musician and songwriter, and plays in a band with his old schoolmates.

Raymond joined the EDC team in 2005 as a highly-qualified structural engineer with extensive experience in large-scale projects in China and a bachelor degree in civil engineering of University of Auckland. In 2007, he completed his master’s degree in Engineering Studies in University of Auckland after combining his EDC role with part-time study for two years.
Raymond has extensive technology skills, particularly in the use of SAP2000/Microstran, 2D and 3D structural analysis software used in the design of a wide variety of steel and concrete framed structures. Raymond has been involved in IEP and DEE Assessments to a nationwide range projects. This has included physical assessment of buildings and completion of IEP and DEE calculations and seismic strengthening design assessments.
In recent years Raymond has been working as a Senior Structural Engineer, including on large community housing development projects.
