Senior Civil Engineer – Christchurch

Engineering Design Consultants Ltd (EDC) is a medium-sized, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplined engineering consultancy providing clients with an innovative, reliable, friendly service and creative solutions to ensure a smooth pathway from conception to completion. We have offices in Auckland, Christchurch, and the Bay of Plenty offering structural, civil, geotechnical, environmental and fire engineering services predominantly for architects, developers, planners, surveyors and building owners.

To contribute to the success of EDC in achieving its business and strategic goals by working as part of our Christchurch Civil Team to deliver high quality professional consulting services to clients ensuring consistent levels of satisfaction, repeat business, and opportunities for new business.


  • Design and construction observation: You will be completing jobs from start to finish mainly involving report writing, calculations, Civil 3D design, contract documentation, client liaison, supervision and managing construction issues. You would be the primary person in the Civil team to undertake construction observation on shared jobs. You will be accountable for your billable time with the support of the Civil teams in Auckland and Christchurch to undertake your role;
  • General civil engineering works including stormwater, wastewater, water supply and roading infrastructure design, and supervision for land, residential and commercial developments;
  • Civil engineering infrastructure investigations, concept evaluation, reporting, design drawing and site supervision for land, residential and commercial developments;
  • Preparation of civil engineering design and drawings for Resource/Building Consent Applications with an excellent understanding of the processes associated with Resource Consents, Engineering Approvals, and Building Consents;
  • Liaison with clients and their professional advisors including preparation of quotations;
  • Co-ordinating projects with other staff members and clients;
  • Site inspections during construction to maintain a high level of quality control;
  • Bulk earthworks and sediment control drawings, volume calculations and reports;
  • Flood plain modelling and reporting on the effects of flooding on development;
  • Assist with invoicing, fee proposals, and resourcing.

Quality and Health & Safety:

  • To ensure that all work undertaken, and behaviour exhibited is in accordance with appropriate professional and technical standards and in accordance with EngNZ Code of Ethics and AS/NZS Standards;
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of guidelines, technical standards, legislation, and codes of practice relevant to Civil Engineering practice in New Zealand;
  • Ensure all work is appropriately designed, checked, published, and distributed in accordance with EDC QA and IT policies;
  • Implement Safety in Design requirements in relevant designs;
  • Ensure all projects have the appropriate documents completed and checked.

Business Development:

  • Client liaison, marketing, and networking to ensure client satisfaction, repeat business and identification of new opportunities in the market;
  • Promote the services of the company and specifically actively participate in obtaining Civil work for this section;
  • Liaison with geotechnical, structural, environmental and fire engineering areas of the business to provide a total service solution to clients.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years professional experience in Civil engineering in NZ;
  • A tertiary qualification in Civil engineering;
  • Working toward EngNZ membership as a Chartered Professional Engineer.

Skills, Knowledge and Personal Attributes:

  • A track record in Civil engineering assessments and design across a variety of projects;
  • Strong ability to prepare technical drawings in Civil 3D and to clearly identify the details complexities and nuances of projects and design accordingly;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Good site manner and the ability to effectively manage sites and maintain good working relationships with contractors, clients, and council staff;
  • Current knowledge Council EPA inspection and signoff requirements;
  • Good working knowledge of computers and relevant technical software
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships, both internally and externally;
  • Aptitude to learn new tools/software as required;
  • Desire to maintain professional knowledge through up skilling and on-going training and/or development;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills to collaboratively work and contribute within the team on projects;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously.
