Sourcing engineering in remote areas such as Matauri Bay in the far, far north can be challenging. Employing the services of a multi-discipline engineering practice such as EDC to build a new local school provided tangible benefits. To start, EDC Geotech and Civil worked to break in the land and subtly modify exisitng land formation. Open classrooms with lots of glass to maximise light presented a structural engineering challenge in such a high wind zone, whilst EDC’s Environmental team introduced storm water quality treatment and flowrate buffers in the form of vegetated swales and a wetland detention pond.
EDC provided a seamless one-stop-shop for Civil, Geotech, Structural and Environmental engineering (including some fire design). All involved were rewarded when the school received a 5-star ‘Greenstar’ rating – the first in NZ to do so.
