EDC had a blast spending a term with youngsters at a local school helping them understand Newton laws and how to think like an engineer, by creating and testing some water rockets. Tyler and Angus spent their time engaging with classes at both Birkdale North Primary School in Auckland and St Albans Primary School in Christchurch. They really enjoyed spending their time with the next generation, introducing them to the world of science and engineering. Students worked closely with EDC to design, build, test and launch their own rockets. Students were exposed to tasks that our engineers experience each day. They learned key creative thinking techniques from the early stages of concept design, right through to prototype testing and finals day where we got to see who’s rocket would fly the furthest. Despite some rockets initially failing to make it off the launch pad, we went back to the drawing board and re-capped on Newton’s laws to understand our failures and solve our problems. Come finals day, each rocket made it off the ground with the winning rocket reaching 49m!
Special thanks to Wonder Project for organising such a fun learning experience for both the children and our engineers, and also to the schools and students who made this experience all the better.
