With the expertise to ensure compliance with standards set down in the New Zealand Building Act 2004 and relevant New Zealand Standards, Engineering Design Consultants (EDC) play a crucial role in the safe construction of your project.

Highly experienced in a diverse range of small to large-scale projects, our track record for engineering excellence includes work on multi-storey apartment buildings, offices, warehouses, factories, churches, schools, community facilities and residential projects that comply, or fall outside of, specified design codes.

Generally, we are responsible for entire projects, although we can work on individual structural elements of a building such as beams, columns and flooring.

In addition, we are highly skilled in other areas that require structural expertise – for example, bridges and culverts, commercial signs, shade sails, retaining walls, silos, tanks and the support structures for various industrial processes.

Structural analysis and design

Our structural portfolio includes the complex analyses required for multi-storey steel, timber and reinforced concrete buildings. We analyse these structures with a host of 2D and 3D computer software to provide safe and cost effective solutions. We produce the detailed structural design drawings for small to large-scale buildings and industrial projects, and also provide a structural design service for the renovations to existing buildings. In addition, we have specialist skills in the structural design work required for the construction of large advertising signage throughout New Zealand.

Seismic design

Our structural engineers can undertake sophisticated computer modelling and apply good practical knowledge to the crucial aspects of seismic design for building and industrial development projects. We can report on the condition of existing buildings and recommend seismic upgrading work, or start from scratch with a proposed building to advise and design the necessary seismic design features to the current standards within New Zealand.

Design certification

We have Chartered Professional Engineers who will certify their structural design work using the normal Producer Statement system required under the Building Act for small scale residential dwellings to large buildings and specific non-building related design projects.

Review and reporting on existing buildings

This aspect of our work includes pre-purchase structural inspections for homes, and commercial and industrial buildings.

We respond rapidly to clients requiring certification from local authorities for homes affected by unauthorised works (i.e. works carried out without appropriate council consents). These issues often arise during house sales, and our prompt service, high-level knowledge and local council experience can provide anxious clients with peace of mind, safe and sanitary reports or Certificates of Acceptance.

Construction certification

We have the experience and diversity of skills necessary to ensure your construction project is monitored to the highest standards. We will inspect the construction work in progress and liaise with the contractor and issue instructions where required on the relevant technical matters. Our Chartered Engineers can certify the completed construction work using the normal Producer Statements required by council in accordance with the Building Act.
