The Christchurch and Canterbury Earthquake Sequence
Engineering Design Consultants was directly involved in immediate habitability assessments of residential buildings following the 4th September 2010 and subsequent earthquakes.
Our participation included temporary make-safe recommendations and in some cases, evacuation of buildings. Following this, EDC have completed detailed engineering assessments of many types of structures ranging from domestic properties and single to multi-storey buildings, to assist in the development of repair strategies.
Having worked in partnership with various affected parties during these initial stages, EDC is 100% committed to the rebuild of Christchurch City.
Structural Solutions to Stand the Test of Time
We are committed to the recovery and rebuild of Christchurch through our work with home and business owners, project managers and developers. We are focused on prioritising the structural assessment of existing buildings and the Detailed Engineering Evaluation process. Meanwhile, as part of the repair and rebuild process, EDC is working on a number of strengthening projects encompassing seismic enhancements to existing buildings, as well as being involved in the engineering design of many new projects. From residential housing to high rise commercial complexes and industrial warehouses, EDC can provide a solution.
A full range of structural services, for both existing buildings and new build projects, are provided locally by EDC's Christchurch office. Our engineers have experience local to the Canterbury region as well as internationally and our structural teams are equipped with the most up-to-date structural analysis software.
Geotechnical Design for Uncertain Conditions
EDC is currently undertaking geo-technical investigations for many projects, ranging from domestic repairs and re-builds to new commercial and industrial construction.
We are also completing geotechnical investigations for new subdivisions, in order to assess the likely impact of any future earthquakes and advise on appropriate ground remediation and foundation options.
Our intrusive investigations, and subsequent interpretation of ground information, utilise the most up-to-date technology to assess the possibility of further liquefaction and lateral spreading (along with the non-seismic related geotechnical properties of the ground). Intrusive techniques include Cone Penetration testing, sonic drilled and rotary drilled boreholes, both with Standard Penetration Testing. We also have experience in using geophysics to determine soil properties.
Our geo-environmental team are undertaking NES/HAIL (National Environmental Standards/Hazardous Activities and Industries List) investigations to provide reports for consent to allow rural subdivisions and create usable land for people to relocate from within Christchurch City.
